On 3 March 2011, Sheriff’s deputies arrested Joe Mead, 55, of Cullman, charging him with one count of receiving stolen property, first degree, and one count of theft of property, first degree.
Mr. Mead was arrested following an in-depth investigation into tractor and heavy equipment thefts throughout Cullman County.
“The uncovering of these thefts is a testament to the hard work of the investigation division of the Sheriff’s Office; I am especially thankful for the leadership of Chief Deputy Max Bartlett and Captain Scott Clay, Lieutenant Ricky Blackwood, Lieutenant Phillip Patterson, and Investigator Doug Duke during the course of this investigation,” commented Sheriff Mike Rainey. “For the past several years, Cullman County has experienced a dramatic increase in thefts and burglaries. This arrest is just a small sign that we are committed to doing all we can to protect the people of Cullman County and their property from those who chose to violate the law.”
The investigation recovered a John Deer 6330 four-wheel drive tractor, stolen between 27 December and 29 December, valued at around $60,000, owned by the Cullman Stockyard. Additionally, a spreader truck stolen between 15 December and 2 February, worth around $35,000, was recovered in an adjoining county. The Sheriff’s Office is still attempting to recover a large, oversized, box-blade, green in color and approximately eight-feet wide, which was also stolen.
“We are dedicated to solving property crimes for affected victims in Cullman County,” commented Captain Scott Clay, Investigation Division Chief. “We are committed to developing a stronger and enhanced investigation division to better serve the citizens of this county. This investigation was part of a concentrated team effort, and reflects the overall approach of the Sheriff’s Office.”
Anyone with any information regarding these, or other equipment thefts are encouraged to contact the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.
Mr. Mead was released on a $65,000 property bond late Thursday afternoon. The case is still under investigation, with more arrests likely in the coming days.
