On Jan.17 at midnight, newly elected sheriff Mike Rainey will officially begin his tenure as the county’s highest ranking law enforcement official. As Rainey assumes his duties at the Sheriff’s Office he is optimistic that positive changes are on the horizon for the law enforcement agency.

“One of my biggest goals as I take office is to increase the visibility of the Sheriff’s Office,” he said. “I want the people of Cullman County to see sheriff’s deputies throughout the community and to know that we are working to ensure that our community is as safe as it can possibly be.”

The new sheriff said that during the early stages of his transition some changes will take place in the Sheriff’s Office.

“There are, of course, going to be some minor changes as I begin my term as sheriff, but nothing drastic,” he said. “I plan to rely heavily on the six-point plan that I ran on as I look at some of the changes that I want to implement.”

Rainey’s six-point plan addresses response time for calls to the patrol division, drug eradication, and cooperation with the public.

“My patrol division will concentrate on making response time a primary patrol function whether it is responding to livestock in the roadway or a burglary in progress,” said the new sheriff. “I will make the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office a true first responder when a call for help is made.”

Rainey also said that the resources of the Sheriff’s Office will be heavily dedicated to eliminating Cullman County’s growing methamphetamine problem.
