In 2004 the Sheriff's Office received a federal grant for the training and purchase of four Narcotic Detector Canines. The canines are Belgian Malinois and were imported from Holland. Each of the canines are assigned to a Deputy. Each Deputy is responsible for the care of their assigned canine and keeps their canine at their home. The Deputies work 12 hour shifts, one canine team per shift. Along with the Deputies canine responsibilities, they have to work a district (answer calls, serve warrants/civil papers, business checks, etc.) In 2008 the Sheriff's Office received a grant from Homeland Security to purchase an Explosive Detector Canine. This Explosive Detector Canine is 0ne of three in North Alabama. The canines are a very valuable tool that the Sheriff's Office has. With a positive alert from a canine, Deputies are able to get search warrants for residence and other property. In some cases, with a positive alert from the canine, Deputies can search vehicles and other property without a warrant.

to Cullman Narcotics Team.
Frankie is a two year old Vizsla and was imported
form Budapest Hungary.
Cpl. Wray and Canine Astra team has worked
together for 2 years.
Cpl. Wray is a certified handler, works district 7
and is a supervisor on Delta shift.
Astra is a 7 year old Belgian Malinois.
Cpl Bales and Canine Max - Team has worked
together for 5 years.
Cpl. Bales is a certified handler who works
district 2 and is a supervisor on Charlie shift
Max is a 7 year old Belgian Malinois
Cpl. Duke and Canine Vicki - Team has worked
together for 5 years.
Cpl. Duke is a certified handler who works
district 2 and is a supervisor on Brovo shift.
Vicki is a 7 year old Belgian Malinois.
Deputy Eddy and Canine Kelly - team has worked
together for 1 year.
Deputy Eddy is a certified handler who works
district 4 on Alfa shift.
Kelly is an 8 year old Belgian Malinois.

Project Lifesaver International (PLI) helps provide rapid
response to save lives and reduce potential for serious injury for
adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down
Syndrome, dementia and other related disorders. PLI provides equipment,
training, certification and support to law enforcement, public safety
organizations and community groups which operate the Project Lifesaver
program in their communities. PLI has over 1,000 participating agencies
across the U.S., Canada, and Australia, and has performed over 1,900
