The E-911
Communications Center received a total of 151,320
calls for service on administrative lines during
2007. The E-911 Communications Center answered a
total of 27,398 calls for service from the E-911
telephone lines. Of that total, there were 20,338
calls for Law Enforcement Services, 2,976 calls for
Medical Services, and 1169 calls for the services of
Volunteer Fire Departments. The E-911 Communications
Center also maintains all files concerning entries
into the National Crime Information Center/Alabama
Criminal Justice Information Center computer
systems. Such files included
wanted persons, missing persons and stolen property.
Communications
- Most often referred to by deputies as 'dispatch',
can best be described as controlled chaos during an
emergency situation. The dispatcher can often be
found talking to a complainant on the phone,
responding to a deputy on the radio, attempting to
make contact with a supervisor over a cell phone all
while typing information concerning the call into
the CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) System. Making
sure that all goes according to plan is Leigh Allen,
supervisor and trainer over 12 dispatchers who work
around the clock, 365 days per year. The dispatcher
is often the only link between a victim and the
right kind of help and is charged with insuring that
assistance - whether in the form of a sheriff's
deputy, firefighters or ambulance services - arrives
in a timely manner. The calls for service in 2007
averaged 12,610 per month with another 2,283
emergency E-911 calls. The dispatch center received
an average of 406
administrative calls per day and 76 E-911 emergency
calls per day. Without the
assistance of the Cullman County 911 Board many of
the current updates to the E-911 Communications
Center would not have been possible. Their
past and continued support has been immeasurable.
