DIVE SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM

Dive Search and Rescue Team - Cullman County has over 9,000 acres of lake water within its borders. With the popularity of personal watercraft and the increase in lakefront residences and community-based activities, the need for a law enforcement presence on the water has become a necessity. The state retains primary responsibility for enforcement, but during holidays, the Cullman County Sheriff's Office is present to attend to the safety and emergency needs of watercraft enthusiasts and others. Broken legs and other injuries due to skiing accidents and numerous boat tows have been handled efficiently due to the purchase of a new platform boat, a 32' pontoon purchased with Federal Grant monies, again at no cost to the county taxpayer. With the addition of this boat and the underwater camera systems of the county fire departments, many areas are now more open to search and rescue operations. The volunteer fire departments of our county remain a valuable ally when emergencies occur. They are instrumental in the successful resolution of crisis situations.

Much of 2004 was spent selecting, equipping and meeting basic training requirement for new dive team members.  The effort proved its worth on two separate occasions during 2004, first in August at Lake George and in December at Smith Lake in the Trimble area.   The dive team is credited with two separate recoveries.  Both recoveries were possible because of the culmination of effort between city and county law enforcement, fire departments, rescue squads, EMS and many other concerned citizens within our community.   We thank all of you for your continued support.
