Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 fall session of the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy, which is sponsored by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is an opportunity for all citizens of Cullman County to learn about the role of law enforcement in our community and to learn more about how your Sheriff’s Office works.  This is an eleven-week program with classes meeting on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-9:00 pm.  There is no fee to attend.

Seats are still available for the fall session beginning August 3.  Once this class is filled, applicants will be enrolled in the next session with start date to be announced later.  Letters of acceptance will be sent to all applicants selected to attend the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy.

Applications may be obtained at the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, which is located at 1910 Beech Avenue, S.E. in Cullman, or by visiting www.cullmansheriff.org and clicking on the Citizens Academy link.  Class size is limited to the first thirty applicants for each session.  For more information you may contact Lt. CITIZENS ACADEMY

Citizens Academy

The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is an opportunity for all citizens of Cullman County to learn about the role of law enforcement in our community and to learn more about how your Sheriff’s Office works.

 

The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is a 12-week program with classes meeting on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-9:00 p.m.  Classes are taught by senior officers of the Sheriff’s Office, as well as by guest instructors from the Cullman County E-911 Board, the District Attorney’s Office, the District Court, and the Circuit Court.  Classes of instruction include:

The learning objectives of the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy include:

Describe the basic organizational structures of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

Explain the mission, values, and role of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

Describe the community policing programs within Cullman County.

bullet

List some of the crime prevention and youth programs within Cullman County.

Describe some investigative techniques used by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

Explain the importance of citizen involvement and volunteers.

Explain the basic concepts of arrest law.

bullet

Describe the drug problem in the community and some enforcement initiatives used by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

There are no fees charged to interested citizens who wish to participate in the program; the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is offered as a service of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office to the citizens of Cullman County.  Questions concerning how to apply or when the next academy will begin should be directed to Lt. Project Lifesaver International (PLI) helps provide rapid response to save lives and reduce potential for serious injury for adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down Syndrome, dementia and other related disorders.  PLI provides equipment, training, certification and support to law enforcement, public safety organizations and community groups which operate the Project Lifesaver program in their communities.  PLI has over 1,000 participating agencies across the U.S., Canada, and Australia, and has performed over 1,900 searches in the last 10 years with a 100% success rate.
